East District (東區) is the larger of the two districts in Chiayi City, encompassing residential areas and Chiayi Park. The park contains remnants of the Chiayi Shinto Shrine, one of the highest-ranked shrines in colonial Taiwan, established in 1915. The Beimen Railway Station dates to 1910 and remains the second stop on the Alishan Forest Railway. The district also preserves Japanese colonial era infrastructure such as the Waterworks Meter Room and East Market, one of the oldest still standing in Taiwan.
