A yin temple (陰廟) on Heping Island housing the unclaimed remains of Ryukyuan fishermen, Spanish colonizers, Japanese, and local residents. During the 228 Incident in 1947 an estimated 30 or more Okinawan fishermen were executed by ROC soldiers on the island, itself known as the Sheliao Island Incident (社寮島事件). To the right of the temple is the Ryukyuan Fisherman’s Monument (琉球漁民慰靈碑), a 2011 memorial statue modeled after Uchima Chōzō, a Ryukyuan fisherman from the Japanese colonial era, and descendants from Okinawa still visit to pay respects.
