An aborted attempt to extend Qing dynasty era education into Taiwanese Indigenous territory along the newly opened Batongguan Old Trail (八通關古道) around 1888. Wanxingguan School (萬興關學堂) enrolled around 20 students but only operated for around a year. In the early 1980s a monument was erected on the site of the long-vanished school to commemorate its historic value.
