Sham Shui Po (深水埗區) is one of the oldest and poorest districts in Hong Kong, with a population of around 400,000. The district is notable as the birthplace of public housing in Hong Kong: Shek Kip Mei Estate was built in 1954 to rehouse residents displaced by a devastating squatter fire.
