Impressive ruins of a 14th century castle on a hilltop in Okinawa, expanded around 1440 by the Ryukyuan lord Gosamaru after his transfer from Zakimi Castle. Six interconnected enclosures trace the ridgeline and are generally considered among the most well-preserved of any Ryukyuan castle thanks to having escaped serious damage in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000 as part of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.
