Built in 1933, the Symes Road Destructor is a former incinerator, and later a waste transfer station. It was decommissioned in 1996, after which it became a regular fixture of the burgeoning urban exploration scene in Toronto in the new millennium. In 2012 it was designated a heritage property, and as of 2018 it was renovated and reopened as an event space and brewpub.
Symes Road Destructor after dark.
Rooftopping some cold winter night.
Creeping through the night with a timer and a tripod.
Messing around with lights in the interior.
Playing with color in abandoned spaces.
The rusty skeleton of an old mattress, later seen in album artwork.
I am a web application developer, photojournalist, urban explorer, and history enthusiast passionate about the open web and documenting my experiences on this planet. This project was founded in the early 2010s and has evolved into a sort of personal Wikipedia of places that interest me (and often the photographs I’ve taken there). I’m originally from Toronto, Canada, but spend most of my time residing in Taiwan.
