Wind lions (風獅爺) are typically small stone deities placed in locations that face the wind. Taking the form of lions, they dispel evil spirits and protect villages, particularly in Kinmen. Fujian sailors also introduced the custom to the Ryukyu Islands where they are known as shīsā (シーサー) and more typically appear on rooftops.
