A coal mining operation along the Utara River on Iriomote run by the Marumitsu Mining Company from 1935 to 1943. At its peak it produced some 2,500 tons of coal per month while supporting around 400 workers along with their families in a company town. Operations wound down as men were conscripted for wartime service and the site was later levelled by American air raids, leaving only faint traces in the jungle today. The ruins were designated a Heritage of Industrial Modernization in 2007.
