Established in the early 1930s as Taikan-butai (大觀舞臺), a venue for traditional opera and other performances. After the war it was renamed and it was operated by Zhang Wuding (張烏定). Due to hyperinflation the site was soon sold and converted into a soap factory. This was eventually demolished but the site was later used for a cinema that became the eponymous Banqiao Theater.
