Southern District (南區), with a population of around 263,000, covers the southern half of Hong Kong Island. Aberdeen, historically a fishing village, remains the only fishing port on the island; at its peak the floating village housed over 28,000 Tanka boat dwellers. Nearby Ap Lei Chau has been called one of the most densely populated islands on Earth.
