Taichung (台中) is the second-largest city in Taiwan, ousting Kaohsiung to claim the title in 2017. Centrally located in the eponymous Taichung Basin, it is a major industrial center and the gateway to popular attractions like Qingjing Farm and Sun Moon Lake. Unlike most other major Taiwanese cities Taichung was developed almost entirely during the Japanese colonial era, which explains the preponderance of classic architecture and the grid street system in the downtown core. Despite its many historic, cultural, and culinary attractions Taichung is seldom attracted as a tourist destination for English speakers, but there's great potential for this burgeoning city's star to shine.
