This project documents the many remnants and traces of the movie theater industry in Taiwan. The cinema industry exploded in the 1950s but went into steep decline in the late 1990s with the popularization of home video, downloading, and modern cineplexes. Hundreds of theaters went out of business from the 1980s to the 2000s but many of their abandoned and derelict husks can still be found in the urban and even rural landscapes of the nation. Some efforts to revive old theaters have also been undertaken, and there are a handful still in operation, all of which will be featured here in this sprawling archive of Taiwanese cinema.
